Arthur Sterngold
Exhibited at Lycoming Arts Gallery July 2024
As a student at Princeton University, Arthur Sterngold studied fine art photography with Emmet Gowin, a renowned artist whose works have been exhibited worldwide. Sterngold was inspired by Gowin’s vision and hoped to follow in his footsteps, but he had to put his photography on the back burner in order to earn a living and raise a family after graduating from college.
Over the next few years, Sterngold worked in marketing, advertising, and economic development. He had long been interested in theoretical and philosophical issues, and so after a period of time, he decided to make a mid-career switch into academic teaching and research. He earned the requisite graduate degrees and then joined the business faculty at Bucknell University. A few years later, Sterngold moved to Lycoming College, where he chaired the business department and taught business and marketing courses for nearly twenty-five years.
Following his retirement in 2021, Sterngold threw himself back into photography with a passion, focusing on subjects in his immediate surroundings. Backyard birds. Bubbling creeks. Blossoming wildflowers. Bent spoon garden stakes. Back-alley barbershops. (And those are just the ones that begin with the letter “b”.) By photographing these objects, Sterngold felt a deepening connection to the people, places, and natural amenities that make our region special.
Since 2021, Sterngold has participated in dozens of indoor and outdoor art festivals and shows, including many of the First Friday events held in downtown Williamsport. In the summer of 2024, he had his first solo photography exhibitions at the Lycoming Arts Gallery in Williamsport and the Artspace Gallery in Bloomsburg. He won first, second, third and fourth place awards in Journey Bank’s regional photography competition that summer, which attracted contestants from all parts of Northcentral Pennsylvania. Also in 2024, Sterngold gave a presentation at the Thomas Taber Historical Museum in Williamsport about the early history and social impact of photography.
Sterngold’s photography studio is located in the historic Silk Mill complex in Hughesville, which also houses an expansive public display of his pictures. He lives in Muncy with his wife, Kathy, who has been a studio potter and ceramic artist for her entire adult life.
